2nd Guest Editorial from pattrice

Late morning is one of my favorite times at the sanctuary. All of the hustle and bustle of the early morning fades away. Many of the birds settle in for a nap. Others forage quietly. Some hens settle down to lay their daily eggs. Gradually, the crowing of the roosters becomes less and less frequent until quiet descends on the coop and yards.

Then we can hear the other sounds of the country. Whoever said the country was quiet was lying. All day and all night, we hear waves of sound. At this time of the day and year, that means insects. In the early spring, it's frogs. And then there are the wild birds! Many are here year round but we actually hear them more in the winter than the summer, because many birds spend their winters here. We're also in the flyover zone for many migrating birds so, at certain times in the spring and fall, migrating wild birds fill up our trees and make so much noise that we can't hear the roosters crowing!

But all of that cacophony is very far away on a quiet mid-morning on a
summer day.
