3rd Guest Editorial by pattrice

It's another hot day here on the Delmarva Peninsula, where the poultry industry kills and cuts up between 10 and 15 million birds every week. I'm waiting for Miriam to come back from the feed store so that we can engage in everybody's least favorite sanctuary task -- unloading the truck.

But however hot and uncomfortable I may be, I know that the chickens in the neighborhood have it worse. There are factory farms on our road and all around us. The landscape is littered with long, low buildings each of which houses tens of thousands of young birds. They survive without sunlight, fresh air, or normal family life until they are trucked to painful and terrifying deaths factories like the one where Virgil used to work.

We're so grateful to Laura and Virgil for doing what they are doing for the birds today. We know that they have paid a costly price for Virgil's decision to quit his job and come forward about the abuses perpetrated against both birds and people by the poultry industry. We hope that events like this will help us achieve our aim of a world where there are no death houses and nobody feels forced by economic circumstances to do dangerous and demoralizing work for low pay.
